Why Makarora? Makarora Tourist Centre specialises in small groups of 10 to 40 people and have a lodge available for evening get-togethers. We offer budget priced meals through to complete wining and dining in style or you can do your own meal in our fully equipped lodge kitchen. There's plenty of space and your accommodation is always within walking distance.

accommodation: We have a variety of accommodation available from private rooms, dorms with en-suites, cabins and self-contained motels.

Location: Bounded by the Mt Aspiring World Heritage National Park, just 16kms south of the Southern Alps main divide, 65kms north of Wanaka and 80kms south of Haast on SH6.

Recreation: Tramping, climbing and walking, hunting, fishing, scenic flights (helicopter and fixed wing) and jet boat rides.

History: Originally Maori used the area to travel to the West Coast. Early industry – mainly flax milling. Haast Pass was named after Julius von Haast, a geologist. The road opened on the 6/11/1965.

Geology : Alpine Fault runs the length of the Southern Alps. Glaciers carved out and shaped the landscape.

Flora &Fauna: Mostly beech forest but an area of Podocarp forest nearby with many native bird species e.g. bellbirds, tuis, fantails, riflemen and pigeons. Important area at the beginning of the venison industry.

Rainfall: heavy – significant to vegetation.

Department of Conservation: A field office is next door to the complex where there are many interesting displays. Brochures are available on mountain safety, out door safety and river safety, as well as on the surrounding area.

Makarora is the starting point for many short or long walks.
  • Siberia Excursion – a day trip
  • Gillespies Pass – at least three days
  • Top Forks – 6 hours from Kerin Forks – stay the night there in the DoC hut and either walk back to Makarora or jet-boat from Kerin Forks.
  • Rabbit Pass into the Matukituki Valley – for the more experienced
  • Blue Pools – just 8 kms up the road – a short walk to see trout and possibly the mohua
  • The old bridal trail from either Davis Flat or the top of the Pass.
  • Alternatively there are several other short walks off the main highway.
